I keep thinking Ian and Frank and the classic Shameless style of completely dropping/forgetting old storylines aka Ian finding out one of Frank’s brothers is his biological father. From what I remember when it happened he shrugged it off in a “what’s the difference/I don’t want to bother him and his life” manner and Frank didn’t care beyond being surprised at Monica.

I have read older discussions about Ian being the loner by choice which, being the third out of six kids myself, I understand - the weird middle sibling position, rarely being left in charge but not one of the little ones either - making decisions to do your own thing and feeling different...but it’s left him in a weird limbo when it comes to his relationship with Frank. He’s never been close with him, there’s no evidence that comes to mind from him referencing stories from when he was little. They rarely have story lines together and if they do they’re small and hostile moments. Now obviously Ian has the most interaction out of anyone with with Monica and that’s something, but think about the fact is that every kid has had Frank’s attention/ storylines with him at one point in the other. Off the top of my head: Fiona many times in fights and more recently about the wedding and her brief pregnancy, Lip when he graduated and in moments at sheila’s, Debbie and her pregnancy and when he was dying, Carl when he was sick and helping with the drug business, and now Liam’s new school.

The questions I’d love to hear opinions on are these:

1. Do the facts that Ian is a loner, has from a young age hated Frank, is not Frank’s biological son and is a lot like Monica justify the lack of storylines together?

2. Is part of the problem early season Ian overall didn’t have as much childhood back story character development as the other kids (I.e his relationships being the focal point)?

3. Are we past the point of no return on Ian exploring the Uncle who is is real dad? Even if that’s true, I think a Frank/Ian dynamic would be worth exploring beyond the hilarious and touching moments when he’s punching, dragging, or macing him away from bothering his siblings.
