Antiquated but fitting

The one and only Chess! Well, not really. Besides the fact that I know of the existence of other ancient Chess versions (I've also played Sh么gi, mind you), our well known Chess has seen some variations over the years. From Bobby Fisher's set-up to the tactical Raindrop Chess and Richard Garfield's wacky example of Rando-Chess (where you roll a die at the end), this classic game can be enjoyed over and over to an unforeseeable exhaustion.

Grand Master Chess offers the option of playing the Fisher variant. This means that the second row pieces start randomized but maintain symmetry between colors. This amps up your brain to start thinking compared to searching for recognizable patterns. Take that, chess nerds!

Besides standard and Fisher rules, you can also create or solve chess problems, or play with a user defined setup. The AI is competent, but hotseat is also an option.

The options are limited to just that unfortunately. So don't get your hopes up. Grand Master Chess also features a very antiquated interface. Being a native full screen application, switching to windowed will only get you frustrated. Don't do it unless you want to play a game of discovering where the window drag area is. The buttons also work like links. Even though some appear to be big, only the text is clickable.

You can change the view between 3D and 2D. I recommend the 2D view since it is harder to see the board clearly otherwise.

Conclusion

Besided being free, I can't find a lot of praise for Grand Master Chess. The interface needs a lot more work and the chess options could use more variety.
